ok so new motor is in, cranks just fine and acts like it wants to start but isnt. definitely getting fuel and spark. so maybe just ignition timing being off?

Make sure your fuel lines are not crossed. Very easy thing to do in these cars

fuel lines are good, just set it tdc and had to fix the dizzy. started up, rough though. then i tried giving it throttle and it died. couldnt get it to start again.

I've played the KA won't start game a few times. Based on what you said, it seems your starting issues are timing and fouled plugs related. Here's what I'd do:

1) Check your plugs. Odds are they are fouled by now (it happens quick). Spray them with brake cleaner or put in a new set.
2) Ask yourself how new your gas is. A fresh five gallons can make a world of difference.
3) Check your timing WITH a timing light. It will be the best $38 you ever spent. Adjust distributor as necessary.
4) Pull the distributor and turn a tooth (or two) and reinstall IF it doesn't come into time by just adjusting the distributor.

im sure they are fouled now, gonna let it sit and clean them tomorrow. gas has been sitting a month to two months so maybe thats it. i do have a timing light, but the engine is supposed to be warm? so just need to get the engine warm to do timing and bleed the coolant. i want it to run already with no issues. i only have a week and a few days left to get started on a break in before im gone for three months.

Pretty certain it's the plugs. The gas should be fine. Check the timing while it is cranking even if it is cold (you aren't going to get it warm if it won't run). You need to get the timing to a point where the car will at least idle. You can fine tune it from them when it gets up to temp. The plugs will re-foul even quicker if you are just using cleaned plugs. Keep an eye on them. I guarantee they will cause you the most headaches in getting it started and idling.

Are you following the "how to time your KA" guide on KA-T.org? That is a pretty simple and clear step by step guide with pictures of the timing marks. Also, what plugs are you running? BKR7E's? You'll want them for when you start driving/seeing boost.

fuck yes! and im already loving the three miles i drove it tonight! the motor feels so different, more responsive. crazy to think that 228000 miles can make it feel sluggish even with boost now

So you swapped in a "new" motor that has 228k on it? Or did you swap in a fresher/rebuilt motor? Just got confused in the last few posts. haahaha Glad it's running!

hell no i wouldnt swap one with that much!!!!!!!!!!!

the original motor had 228, i took a block i had and did a complete lower end rebuild and put that in. so now its basically a new engine. i also put new seals in the head too.

havent had any updates in a while. but im out in cali till august without my car :(

i sure as hell miss driving it and cant wait to get back home. already have plans to start tearing it apart again right away. i will be doing a full wire redo on the harness, getting rid of everything that isnt needed and can be tucked. then itll be body and paint.

wish i could be out there going to the events, hopefully there will be one in august
